NAGPUR: The district administration has geared up to tackle the drinking water crisis ahead of summer and will be spending Rs8.18 crores on it, official sources said today.

A meeting chaired by district collector Praveen Darade today reviewed the situation in 916 villages falling in the district.

SHILLONG, Jan 10: About five villages under the Mawthadraishan Block in West Khasi Hills district have been struggling for a drop of drinking water for over 13 years.

Kanas: Before the onset of the New Year, 22 panchayats of the Kanas block have been facing acute shortage of drinking water. No measures are being taken up by the Rural Development department or by the panchayats. Scarcity of drinking water is a regular phenomenon in the block, claiming human lives every year, afflicting people with gastro-intestinal diseases due to lack of safe drinking water.

As the town faces acute shortage of water, some areas went dry for the fourth consecutive day. Bank employee Subash Sharma, a resident of Sector 4, Parwanoo, told Newsline that taps in his house have been running dry for the last three days.

He further rued that Himachal Urban Development Authority (HIMUDA) has increased the tariff from Rs 5 per 1000 litres to Rs 9.
