Bhopal, Sept 6: Minister of State for Food Processing and Horticulture Shri Karan Singh Verma has said that farmers' development can be ensured only through correct pricing for their produce. He was addressing a daylong workshop on the subject 'Food and Security' here today. Shri Verma informed that food parks will be established at six places in Madhya Pradesh.

Due to the suspension of production by PepsiCo India at its plant at Channo village (near Bhawanigarh) in this district, thousands of potato growers are a worried lot nowadays as in present circumstances they are unable to understand whether Pepsi will purchase their next potato crop or not.

Following the conflict between the PepsiCo management and the workers union of the Channo plant over the issue of reinstatement of some suspended employees and one terminated employee due to the agitation by workers at the plant, the Pepsi management suspended production work.

MELBOURNE: Kirin, the Japanese brewer, is expanding its food business in Australia through the acquisition of Dairy Farmers by its National Foods division.

The acquisition, for 910 million Australian dollars, or $780 million, is intended to help it diversify away from a shrinking domestic beer market.

Calcutta, Aug. 13: Farmers in Bengal will be told of the benefits of food retail in a language they understand and by voices they are familiar with.

The Indian Chamber of Commerce is holding a three-day event called the Second Green Revolution Summit that will be addressed by politicians like chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.

At least 6,500 farmers and agri-traders from Bengal alone are expected to participate in the meeting scheduled from September 24 to 26 at Science City.

Kantivita (Phansidewa), Aug. 3: A Siliguri-based company has invested more than Rs 10 crore to raise a food processing plant here, the produce from which will make its way to several European countries.

The food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and growth prospects. India, which is the second largest food producers in the world, lags behind when it comes to food processing which is very essential for increasing shelf life of the produce and providing more benefit to the growers.

ITC Foods has drawn up plans to foray into the nascent frozen foods category in the domestic market within the next six-eight months. The company will extend its Kitchen of India brand to frozen foods, which would include meals packaged in trays and snacks.

An agro food processing facility will be functional at the Multan Industrial Estate by the end of this year.

Talking to this correspondent here on Tuesday, Pakistan Mango Growers Association President Zahid Hussain Gardezi said that machinery for the Rs213 million facility had been imported from Italy.

He said Smeda provided Rs135 million for the machinery, which had arrived in Karachi, while the Punjab government provided funds for land procurement and construction of a building.
