A strong and dynamic Food Processing Sector plays a vital role in diversification and commercialization of Agriculture, enhancing shelf life, ensuring value addition to agricultural produce, generation of employment, enhancing income of farmers and creating markets for export of Agro Foods.

Pork , fish, eggs, meat and milk form part of the staple food of the people of the North East as such poultry farming and pig rearing also provide gainful employment. However, these are largely confined to backyard rearing and commercialization is yet to make a dent in the region.

The Centrally-sponsored ‘National Mission on Food Processing’ (NMFP) has been established jointly by the State government and Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The objective of the programme is decentralisation of implementation of schemes through participation by State governments.

In a press release issued here on Wednesday, C.Manoharan, Collector, said the NMFP would focus on food processing for enhancing farm productivity and farmer’s revenue. The State government would be facilitated in addressing both institutional and infrastructural gaps along the value chains. An efficient supply chain for farm produce would be created. It would also promote initiatives for skill development, training and entrepreneurship in post-harvest management and food processing industry. The food processing industry would be assisted to meet the standards in terms of food safety laws and market demand – both domestic and international.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) has launched a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) - National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) during 12th Plan (2012-13) for implementation through States / UTs.

Agartala: The Northeast’s fourth mega food park will be set up in Tripura at a cost of Rs 72 crore to accelerate the growth of food processing industry in the region, a minister said here on Sunday.
