Modified scheme benefits tenants and covers all food grain

Crop insurance scheme is being implemented as modified national agricultural insurance scheme in all the 13 blocks in Pudukottai district during 2013-14 based on the administrative sanction accorded by the Centre and approval by the State government.

The Madras High Court bench here ordered notice to the special district revenue officer (DRO) for land acquisition, Pudukottai, on a batch of four writ petitions filed by farmers from Kumaramangalam village, opposing the DRO’s proceedings to acquire their lands for laying a national highway.

In their writ petitions, the petitioners said that they were given land under the State government’s special scheme for the distribution of land to landless agricultural labourers in 2006.

Expressing protest against non-inclusion of Pudukottai district during the recent survey by a team of ministers in samba crop-affected districts, farmers staged a walk-out from farmers’ grievances day meeting here on Thursday.

As soon as C. Manoharan, Collector, came to the meeting hall and started explaining the recommendation by the district administration for certain relief package for the drought-prone zones, a group of farmers were up on their feet, lodging their protest and anguish.

The Centrally-sponsored ‘National Mission on Food Processing’ (NMFP) has been established jointly by the State government and Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The objective of the programme is decentralisation of implementation of schemes through participation by State governments.

In a press release issued here on Wednesday, C.Manoharan, Collector, said the NMFP would focus on food processing for enhancing farm productivity and farmer’s revenue. The State government would be facilitated in addressing both institutional and infrastructural gaps along the value chains. An efficient supply chain for farm produce would be created. It would also promote initiatives for skill development, training and entrepreneurship in post-harvest management and food processing industry. The food processing industry would be assisted to meet the standards in terms of food safety laws and market demand – both domestic and international.
