NAGAON, August 3: After detection of fluoride and iron in underground water sources in different areas under Hojai subdivision, the PHE Hojai division has implemented different water supply schemes including installation of wells and tube wells, piped water supply scheme, fluoride-free water in fluoride-prone areas, testing of drinking water under the National Rural Drinking Water Quality Monitoring (NRDWQM) programme during the last 20 years to redress the problem of contaminated water in Nagaon district.

Chowdhary, former Professor at the Geology Department of Banaras Hindu University, and S.K. Agarwal, also a professor of Geology, has shown that the drinking water in the University premises and some other places in the city contains more radioactive uranium than the recommended limit. Samples for the study were collected from 11 tubewells tapping deep aquifers (more than 100 metre deep).

The health officials, investigating contamination of seven wells in Taleigao today indicated that it may be due to mixture of ammonia in ground water.
