A number you likely know: 400 million. That’s how many people live without electricity in India. And not coincidentally, most of these people are poorest of the poor and live in rural villages or hamlets. The presence of such an enormous population eager for something better has given rise to new commercial products and services such as solar lanterns, solar home systems, and, the subject of this blog, micro-grids.

PANIPAT: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy on Tuesday dedicated to the nation India's largest naphtha cracker plant at Indian Oil Corporation's (IOCs) Panipat Complex.

The complex has been commissioned in 46 months, which compares with the global standard for similar capacity plants and is ahead of average time taken in setting up similar units in India.

The Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGCL) achieved a record generation of 622.71 lakh units of electricity in single day on February 11 and surpassed its own record.

While stating this Sanjeev Kaushal, MD of HPGCL said that this was a land mark achievement as the state power utility had first time crossed the 600-unit milestone.

Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Wednesday said that efforts were being made to make the state self-reliant in power by 2012.

As many as 7 lakh meters of electricity consumers in the state are out of order. This is causing huge monetary losses to Haryana Power Utility as the absence of exact meter readings increases the misuse of power by consumers.

Sources in the power utility say, out of the 46 lakh electricity consumers in the state, as many as 7 lakh have meters which have been out of order for months together.

The Centre has approved nine solar power projects of 8.8 mw capacity to be set up in Haryana by independent power producers.

The poultry industry in Haryana is set for a major makeover. A US-based company is setting up a Rs 65-crore project in Barwala, which is home to one of the largest poultry belts in the country, to generate power using hen droppings.

Where generating power from hen litter is concerned, Haryana is certainly going international.
