The huge untapped natural resources in Arunachal Pradesh when harnessed would make it a front ranking State, Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu said today.

Development of hydropower projects alone, for which the State Government has signed MOUs with several CPUs and private players, would generate at least Rs 12,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore revenue by 2018-20, Khandu told a press conference here.

Despite revising its capacity targets for the second consecutive fiscal to aspire to more realistic goals in 2008-2009, the power ministry has fallen short of the cumulative benchmarks by more than 4,000 Megawatts owing to lack of supplies, manpower and commissioning of projects.

The power demand of the State has doubled in recent years. Against the peak-load-hour demand of 430 MW in 2000, a survey conducted about a month back revealed that the State now requires around 1,000 MW of power during this period.

India has been facing shortage of electricity for almost a decade. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), during the financial year 2008-09, the Indian utilities could supply 689 billion kWh of electricity against requirement of 774 billion kWh, which represents shortfall of about 11.0%.

The electric utility business has historically consisted of centralized, large-scale power plants, supplying electric power to load centers such as cities and industries through a power transmission and distribution network.
