The Madhya Pradesh government, by slashing taxes on LPG and diesel, has tried to give some relief to the common people. However, this decision has come too late. The government effected reduction by 3.02 percent on LPG gas and 2 pc VAT on diesel. This would bring down the price of LPG by Rs 10 and the price of diesel per litre would be reduced by 61 paise per litre. As regards petrol price, no change has been made in taxes. Thus the State government, by reducing the tax on diesel has not done great justice to its people.

Sujay Mehdudia Despite the recent hike in prices of petrol, diesel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), lakhs of consumers across the country continue to face "severe supply' crunch of petroleum products, including LPG cylinders, leading to "artificial shortage' and hoarding in small cities and rural India.

The Union government has affected steep hike in petroleum prices. Petrol is dearer by Rs five, diesel by Rs three per litre and LPG cylinder would not cost Rs 50 more. Prime Minister Manmohan says that price hike had become a crying need in view of heavy losses to oil companies. But the masses think differently. They say that even if price hike was so imperative, it should not have been so steep. The central government should have hiked petrol price by Rs two and diesel price by Re 1 while Rs 20 should have been added to the existing cost of LPG cylinder.
