The Citizens Concern for Dams and Development (CCDD) has expressed apprehension that the Thoubal dam, now 60 per cent complete, was not safe as a big crack could be seen near the spillway. It also appealed to Manipur Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) Minister Nongthongbam Biren to look into the matter. The minister assured the organisation of looking into the matter and ensuring safe construction of the dam.

The Second ADAM Environment Award, 2008, will be conferred on the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA), Imphal, in recognition of their dedicated efforts towards promotion of adventure sports and eco-tourism in the State. The award, the first of its kind in Manipur, carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 along with a citation and a memento.

The two-day North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary has approved the Vision 2020 to restore the NE region to a position of national economic eminence by the next eight to ten years. After hectic discussion among member States of the NEC in the two-day plenary that commenced here on Monday, DoNER Minister Mani Shankar Aiyer, all Governors and Chief Ministers of the region states signed the Vision-2020 document on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has allocated Rs 1225 lakh, Rs 3208.44 lakh and Rs 9.24 lakh respectively to Manipur for the years 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The target for construction of school buildings in Manipur was 170 in the year 2004-05, 287 in 2005-06 and 283 in 2006-07. So far 411 school buildings were constructed during the period. During the last three years, achievement made under the drinking water facilities was 820 schools.

Faced with increasing opposition in executing power projects in the NE, the NEEPCO has decided to form an "advisory group' to address issues related to environment. Union Minister of State for Power, Jairam Ramesh announced here recently that the NEEPCO would form the advisory group comprising eminent environmentalists drawn from IIT, Guwahati and NEHU. The advisory group would suggest how best to implement projects without causing damage to the fragile environment of the region. It would also help to take the public into confidence with regards to environmental issues.
