NEYVELI: Lignite reserve in Neyveli will not last more than three decades and hence, it has become imperative for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation to harness alternative sources of energy, said A.R. Ansari, NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director.

India and Namibia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of Geology and Mineral Resources and an agreement on cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, as Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday.

Federal Government has allocated an amount of Rs 580 million for the growth of mineral sector by 2 percent in 2009-10, which is facing still unpredictable situation in certain mineral potential areas due to the law and order problem. Canada plans to boost its spending on mapping Arctic energy and mineral resources, in order to encourage development and defend Canadian sovereignty in the far North.

The government will spend C$100 million (US$95 million) over five years, building on a plan earlier this year to spend C$34 million over two years, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Tuesday as he prepared to kick off a three-day trip to the region.
