Four people were killed and 17 others trapped in a coal mine accident in China’s northeastern Jilin Province today, local authorities said.

Authorities in Central China's Hunan province have suspended the production licenses of more than 200 coal mine pits for safety reasons.

JAIPUR/AJMER: Six workers were injured during illegal mining at a mine which was purportedly closed six months ago at Makrana in Nagaur district late on Wednesday. The incident occurred at mine no. 135 at Gunwati range.

According to sources, though the mine was closed six months ago, the contractor started working again at the spot as there were still some marbles left. Three of the injured -- Hukma Ram, Dhachi Ram and Sita Ram -- were admitted to Makrana government hospital while three others who sustained serious injuries were shifted to JLN hospital in Ajmer on Thursday. They are Sachdev, Bharatlal and Sohanlal.

Shillong: The Shillong bench of Gauhati High Court has sought a report from the state government on the recent coal mine tragedy in Garo Hills and also on the steps taken to ensure safety of miners in the State.

Accepting a suo-moto PIL on the coal mine mishap, which reportedly claimed 15 lives, the bench directed the state government to submit the report in the form of affidavit by August 28.

New Delhi The labour ministry is planning to move a Bill to amend the Mines Act in the Monsoon session of Parliament, which proposes an increase in penalties on mining companies by as much as 100% in case of death of workers due to any lapse in operations, a senior government official said on Thursday. The Bill will also enlarge the coverage of workers in special economic zones, territorial waters, continental shelf and other maritime zones, where oil explorations are being carried out.

"The Bill will address the safety issues of mining workers. We are trying to introduce the Bill in Monsoon session," a labour ministry official told FE.
