The mines ministry is all set to be re-christened as the Ministry of Mineral Development. After having deliberated at length, the ministry has decided to re-name itself and will soon seek the approval of cabinet secretary K M Chandrasekhar.

SHILLONG, Dec 7: Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary today underscored the importance of preserving the environment by shifting from outdated method to a scientific mode of coal mining in Jaintia Hills.
To check illegal mining activities in the State, the State Government maintained that it is contemplating to prepare a map of the actual mining lease area by using remote sensing technology.
SHILLONG: "We are not opposed to scientific mining but in the name of scientific mining, the role, privileges and involvement of local tribals cannot be overlooked," said senior NCP leader Purno A Sangma.
"The NCP has asked the Congress-led government to be cautious in formulating the mining policy," Mr Sangma said at a media briefing at his official residence here.
The underground fire in Kujju along the Ranchi-Patna highway (NH-33) has been tamed, well almost, claims Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), but it is still unclear whether the stretch is safe for traffic.
