With an aim to increase awareness about efficient use of energy, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) organised a symposium on urban sustainability and green buildings at Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10, Chandigarh on Sunday.

Pushing hard for renewable sources of energy, minister of new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah has asked President of Iceland, Dr Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, to assist India in developing geothermal energy.
Iceland has been in the forefront of developing geothermal energy and hydro power and is currently generating 575 MW geothermal energy against a capacity of 10,500 MW.

Lighting at the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti will soon be run on solar energy. The Union minister for renewable energy, Mr Farooq Abdullah, has sanctioned a project in this regard. It will not only save energy but also help to cut down the costs.

NEW DELHI: India plans to install 20 million solar lights and 20 million square metres of solar panel to generate 20,000 MW by 2022 as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said on Monday.

NEW DELHI: A Japanese delegation led by Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Kazuhiro Haraguchi on Wednesday met the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah and decided to jointly develop a solar city in India.

During the bilateral meeting both sides discussed various aspects of cooperation between the two countries in the field of renewable energy.

A total of 60 cities of the country are proposed to be developed as Solar Cities during the 11th plan period. The objective is minimum 10 per cent reduction in projected total demand of conventional energy. At least one city in each State to a maximum of five cities in a State will be supported by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.
