MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council’s action on the garbage management seems to be progressing at a snail’s pace.

In fact, the civic body has shown no urgency in finalising an action plan on the door-to-door waste collection till date. While the door-to-door waste collection concept is yet to be tendered, the civic body has till date not yet decided how to go about capping of the existing dumping site at Sonsodo.

Following the Bombay High Court’s stay on usage of the Kanjurmarg landfill for dumping municipal solid waste, the civic administration claimed wrong evidence was produced in court during the trials.

According to Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani, who gave the BMC’s explanation on the judgment on standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale’s request, the landfill area does not fall under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).

This constitutes over 2 per cent of municipal waste in Chennai. The civic body will soon take initiatives to address challenges such as the lack of training for staff of hospitals in segregation of such waste and colour coding for waste management.

Corporators on Wednesday raised the issue of BMC not being able to collect garbage regularly, which has apparently led to waste piling up in their wards.
