The GVMC has violated the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2000, and has been dumping the city garbage at Kapuluppada for which the AP Pollution Control Board has denied permission for the landfill.

Around 800 mt of waste is being generated per day in the city which contains around 45 pc of domestic and 13 pc of commercial waste, according to officials.

Phursungi-Uruli Villagers Warn Of Agitation If Blaze That Broke Out On Sunday Is Not Put Out

A huge fire that broke out at the garbage depot in Phursungi-Uruli on Sunday afternoon was not completely extinguished till late Monday evening, villagers said. They complained of irritation in the eyes and difficulty in breathing as the smoke pervaded the area surrounding both villages. The villagers, who have been protesting for years against the very presence of the garbage dump, have threatened to block garbage trucks from entering the depot if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fails to put out the fire by Tuesday evening.

800 Tonnes Created Daily, It Comprises 80% Of Trash Reaching Landfills

New Delhi: Delhi is among the largest producers of plastic waste in the country generating over 800 metric tonnes per day. Around 750 metric tonnes reach landfill sites daily of which roughly 80% are plastic bags and packaging materials. In fact, the capital is among nine cities across India where plastic forms more than 10% of the total waste generated. What makes it more embarrassing for the local government is that plastic bags have been banned in the city since 2009, and not just once but twice.

CM Prithviraj Chavan announced Wednesday formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities and violation of norms by private contractors at the Deonar, Kanjurmarg and Mulund dumping grounds.

"The government needs to evolve a solid waste management policy to effectively tackle the 7,000 metric tonnes of garbage generated in Mumbai. "Preliminary reports have established violation of norms by those awarded 25-year contracts to maintain the dumping grounds," he told the legislative assembly.

Even as Thrikkakara attracts more people on account of its rising profile as the Information Technology hub, the municipal authorities are grappling with rising solid waste generation it entails.

However, the municipal authorities are talking in different voices when it comes to waste management, which was visible during the recent Budget.
In the introductory remarks to the Budget, municipal chairman P.I. Mohammadali expressed hope of getting a solid waste treatment plant off the block during the 2013-14 fiscal itself.

A panel of experts from agencies including Central Pollution Control Board and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute will scrutinise proposals for new solid waste management plants in the city.

The Chennai Corporation has shortlisted 10 proposals for the plants that are to come up on the outskirts. All the shortlisted companies will make a detailed presentation of the proposals and experts will identify technology that is clean.

National Green Tribunal Hauls Up Industries For Not Having Proper Pollution Control Systems

Noida: A six-member expert committee constituted by National Green Tribunal to determine ‘sources’ and ‘extent’ of pollution in Noida has taken cognizance of diesel generators operating in large numbers, due to lack of adequate power, for causing sound and air pollution. The committee, in its report submitted to the tribunal on Tuesday, has also held inoperative traffic signals and lack of traffic management responsible for causing vehicular jams which lead to air pollution.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s composting plant in Okhla received Rs.25 lakh as carbon credits from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
