There are no takers for greater transparency in the implementation of UPA flagship National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, as state governments have failed to appoint ombudsman in around 600 districts across the country.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), introduced in Jorhat district of Assam in April 2008, has already made much headway in the sphere of employment generation. About 83% people of the district live in rural areas. Job cards have already been issued to more than 50% of rural households.

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved re-naming the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGREGA), but not before the Government was criticised for corruption in the implementation of the scheme launched in 2005.

Rural Development Minister C P Joshi said on Thursday that government was considering interlinking its rural sanitation programme with NREGA to eradicateopen defecation by 2010. Joshi said interlinking would lead to utilisation of funds available under material and labour components of NREGA and thereby expedite the programme.

A large number of poor families in Ambala are yet to get the payment for their work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act even though three months have passed.

As per the guidelines under the scheme, it is mandatory that the payment to the labour be made every fortnight.
