Schoolkids appear on NREGA rolls in village

Dharamsala: Another case of alleged corruption in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) has come to the fore. In Masroor village panchayat, the names of schoolchildren have appeared on the muster rolls of development works carried out under NREGA. Interestingly the school children have appeared in the board examinations and worked under NREGA, simultaneously as per the records.

Disturbing trends in NREGA implementation

Only 14 per cent job card holding households have got employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in the financial year 2009-10 till date in Assam, out of which 69 per cent families got less than 20 days employment till the end of December 2009.

More than one billion people in the world are employed in agriculture, and most work in extremely precarious conditions. They cannot guarantee the food security of their families. Improvements will come only if these workers are better organised and better able to engage in collective bargaining. The IUF is working with its affiliates to make this happen.
