The Comptroller and Auditor-General has found serious lapses in implementation of the UPA’s flagship programme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

This second performance audit of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act by CAG covering the period from April 2007 to March 2012 was tabled in the Parliament recently.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday presented to Sikkim an award for “extraordinary and innovative” work done by the State’s Rural Management and Development Department.

The Prime Minister presented a medal, a scroll and cash award of Rs 5 lakh to DR Nepal, secretary, Rural Management and Development Department, Sikkim, for exemplary performance of civil servants in the organizational category for year 2011–12, said a statement issued by Sikkim’s principal resident commissioner here.

Assessment by high-level committee based on interactions with farmers

A Rs.1,755-crore package of drought relief measures was unveiled on Friday for non-Cauvery delta districts in the State.
Of this package, six components were meant for about 17.9 lakh farmers, who had suffered over 50 per cent crop loss. The farmers, for a variety of crops, would receive a total compensation of Rs. 835.21 crore.

Chandy lays stress on rainwater harvesting

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has directed officials to ensure that rainwater harvesting pits are made compulsory for all new constructions in the capital district, apart from initiating digging of rain pits under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
Addressing a drought review meeting at the District Collectorate here on Monday, Mr. Chandy said the maximum sum District Collectors could sanction for drought relief projects would be raised to Rs.20 lakh from the existing Rs.5 lakh.

Pune: The regional office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has disbursed Rs 7,348.39 crore for agriculture and rural development across the state.

The amount — which is 22% higher than the previous year — has been allotted for the financial year 2012-13. M V Ashok, chief general manager of Nabard regional office, said, “Nabard has also decided to converge the watershed development projects with Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).

Check dams will be constructed on various water bodies in the district for conservation of water, District Panchayat President K.V. Dasan has said.

Addressing a district-level seminar on water conservation organised jointly by various departments and local bodies here on Wednesday he said the dams would be constructed in co-operation with the gram panchayats.
