The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued directions to three municipal councils for treating waste by violating Environment Protection Act leading to pollution in the vicinities.

The directions were issued to Mormugao Municipal council, Mapusa Municipal Council and Sanquelim Municipal Council, have been issued under section 5 of the Environment (protection) Act 1986, read with Municipal Solid Waste (Management and handling) rules, 2000.

The parliamentary standing committee on urban development has recommended waste incinerator plants be shut in residential areas across the country. In its 27th report, the committee severely criticized the location and use of “mixed solid waste” for such plants. This may come as a morale-booster for several residents in Sukhdev Vihar, New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh and other areas loacted near the Okhla waste-to-energy plant who have been complaining of pollution.

The Kochi corporation is planning to implement the Zero Waste Project in west Kochi. The project will cover flats, hotels and restaurants in the area.
