Government of the Maldives showcased its success story in ozone protection and achieving carbon neutrality in a side event organized by the Ministry of Housing and Environment of Maldives in cooper

HFCs could be responsible for emissions equivalent to 3.5 to 8.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide (Gt CO2eq) by 2050, according to this new UNEP report.

Chemical ozone destruction occurs over both polar regions in local winter–spring. In the Antarctic, essentially complete removal of lower-stratospheric ozone currently results in an ozone hole every year, whereas in the Arctic, ozone loss is highly variable and has until now been much more limited. Here we demonstrate that chemical ozone destruction over the Arctic in early 2011 was—for the first time in the observational record—comparable to that in the Antarctic ozone hole.

Earlier this year, ozone loss over the Arctic was on a scale comparable to that over the Antarctic.

Modernization should not lead to destruction. It must improve the quality of life, said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at a function on International Day for the preservation of Ozone Layer.

Lowering greenhouse gas emissions is not only good for environment, but it also may benefit an entity’s bottom line. India has a huge potential for carbon financing, which is an emerging business opportunity for Indian companies.

The Ozone Secretariat has released a report of the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel, titled "Environmental Effects of Ozone Depletion and its Interactions with Climate Change: 2010 Assessment." The report outlines the interactions between climate change and the ozone layer, including changes in atmospheric conditions that affect the chemical production and loss of stratospheric ozone.

Speaking at the Ministerial segment of the Twenty Second Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer held in Bangkok, 11-12 November, Minister of State Kamaludeen high-lighted the critical role that the Maldives is playing as an active member of the Protocol.

Minister of State said,

A fine ranging from Nu 5,000 to Nu 10,000 will be slapped on Bhutanese entrepreneurs caught importing or producing appliances containing hydro- chloroflurocarbon (HCFC) gas, a colourless non-toxic gas used in electronic devices.

The regulation is spelt out in the hydro-chloroflurocarbons management plan prepared by the national environment commission and approved by the Montreal protocol.
