BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has decided to plant five crore saplings in the State during the year.

This was decided at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday at the Secretariat. The saplings will be planted on 1.15 lakh hectare under various schemes of the Forest Department.

BHUBANESWAR: A whopping 25 lakh saplings were planted across Orissa on Tuesday as part of the afforestation drive by the Forest Department.

The plantation activities were held across 205 forest locations in the State.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced it at a Vanomahotsav function yesterday. Public, school and college students would be involved in this endeavour, he said.

LUCKNOW: The week-long Van Mahotsav would come to a close on July 7. The Green Run-2009 will mark its formal conclusion on Tuesday. The run will start from KD Singh Babu stadium at 7.00am on the day and end at GPO Crossing.

LUCKNOW: Late arrival and now weak monsoon conditions have hit farmers hard. If the same trend continued for a weak, it is feared that the Kharif crop yield would drop by 20-30% this season. Adding to the woes of farmers is the poor power supply in the rural belt and the recent hike in diesel prices.

In an attempt to encourage people to plant saplings on private land, the Forest department has instituted the Kanshi Ram Conservation award.

Forest Minister Fateh Bahadur Singh announced the institution of the award at the inauguration of the Van Mahotsav at Vardaan Khand of Gomti Nagar here on Wednesday.

In a slow but definite transformation in farming patterns in the state, farmers are increasingly opting for direct seed plantation that is conducive to growing rice in fields without water puddles or with a minimum level of water. Scores of farmers in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur and Patiala districts have reportedly adopted the new technique.

BHUBANESWAR: Mission Shakti is all set to launch a plantation drive in individual households in partnership with the Horticulture Department from July.

It has been planned to raise specifically drumstick, papaya and lemon plants through members of the women self-help groups. The three plant varieties are chosen for the high nutritional value of their fruits.

The State Government will bear the cost of diesel used by the farmers for pumping water to their paddy fields for plantation purposes, in view of the present dry weather condition. This was announced by Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman while taking part in the debate on supplementary demand for relief and rehabilitation.

Rs 3,500-Cr Support Package Likely To Be Announced Independent Of The Budget
