A team of scientists from the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun has left for Delhi to treat the afflicted ornamental plants supplied from across India to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games. In addition to this the FRI is also involved in the environmental aspects of various other works in Delhi like creation of a butterfly park and planned greening of flyovers.

Fertility of 17.14 lakh hectares has been improved and more than 65 lakh fruit saplings planted in Madhya Pradesh as part of the Nandan Falodyan Sub-Scheme under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

''The planting has been undertaken over 23,578 hectares,'' Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Gopal Bhargava said today on the occasion of the Earth Day.

Coffee Board chief wants good tree cover over estates

Demand may exceed production in five years from now

CHIKMAGALUR: G.V. Krishna Rau, chairman of the Coffee Board, said on Saturday that tree cover in 1,20,000 hectares of land in the Western Ghats region had been reduced because of expansion of coffee plantations between 1980 and 2000.

Fruit rot disease (kole roga) has worsened the condition of areca plantations in the region, thanks to the incessant rains lashing for the past one week.

Farmers who are solely dependent on the crop, have been totally discouraged by the development.

Udhampur: Under the Operation Green, the Udhampur police initiated a plantation drive in the District Police Lines (DPL), Udhampur, today.

LUCKNOW: Light to moderate rains continued in many parts of the state, thus bringing the rainfall deficit up by seven per cent in the last 10 days. The total rains in the monsoon season till August 27 were 46 per cent below normal, which stood at 39 per cent below normal on September 8.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Friday ordered a gram pradhan to plant at least 500 saplings of deodar on the forest land and look after these for five years.
