Delhi Jal Board will construct 53 underground reservoirs before the Games: Chief Minister

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) has taken an initiative to develop a proper sewerage system with a view to curbing pollution of Banani-Gulshan and Gulshan-Baridhara lakes.

The decision was taken yesterday at a meeting attended by LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal and Public Works Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Ghulam Quader.

The meeting decided to incorporate the Gulshan-Banani lake into the Hatirjheel project. The proposed system will carry wastes from Gulshan and Banani lakes to the sewerage system of Hatirjheel project, reducing pollution of the water bodies.

Excavation of few canals and removal of already identified blockages in the drainage system can save the port city from waterlogging and inundation, said the speakers at a roundtable yesterday.

The roundtable titled 'Drainage: A Menace for Chittagong' was organised by The Daily Star Chittagong Bureau Office at its conference room in the afternoon.

It was the first of a series of roundtable that The Daily Star Chittagong Office will hold on different development issues of the port city.

There is no possibility of respite for around 4 lakh people in Jhigatola area in the city from severe waterlogging soon as the authorities are likely to start work for development of a new sewerage system in the area in November.

People of the area said they have been facing serious waterlogging over the years during the rainy seasons, but the authorities do not take any effective steps to solve the perennial problem.

Hundreds of people on Wednesday staged a demonstration in the city's Pakka Garha locality against the district government's failure to lay a sewerage system here despite repeated appeals by locals to the authorities over the last several years.

The protesters, who were carrying banners and placards inscribed with their demands, raised slogans against the district government. They said there was no drainage and sewerage system in their locality and the sewerage water was entering their houses.

Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgari has said that a water supply and sewerage scheme for the development of Qasimabad taluka has been submitted to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and he has called for a feasibility report from the departments concerned to lay a network of development schemes in Qasimabad.
