Over 70 lakes in Mandya, Shimoga and Hassan districts have been encroached upon by the land sharks. Several of these lakes have reportedly been encroached upon by local cartels and powerful individuals.
At least 74 people died in rain-related incidents in Karnataka since June as the state received 391 mm of rainfall in the last one-and-half months against the normal average of 328 mm, Revenue Minister G Karunakara Reddy informed the assembly today.

Forest Department has arrested 30 farmers including 8 women for cultivation in bagair hukum land, in Haragihal forest limits (Shikaripur taluk) on Monday.
