The Corporation will soon entrust ICLEI South Asia, a consultancy agency, to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Solar City project.

The proposal to award the DPR preparation to ICLEI will be presented at the first Council meeting after the Corporation Budget session on Saturday. Once the Council gives its nod, the agency will be awarded with the work which is expected to be completed in three months. The estimated cost for DPR preparation is `10 lakh.

As a first step, all establishments under the civic body to set up solar panels on rooftops

The rooftops of all establishments in Coimbatore Corporation limits will soon turn energy generation stations with the civic body planning to install solar panels. The civic body in a recent resolution said that based on a Government Order from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, the civic body proposed to install solar panels on the terrace of all its establishments.

The aim of this Energy Efficiency Handbook is to point out opportunities for energy savings and to improve energy efficiency of buildings and operations, and help obtain the correct assistance in identifying and implementing energy efficient projects.

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday installed a solar streetlight on an experimental basis as part of Centre-sponsored solar city project.

The solar lights, which will be installed in the stretch between Delta and OUAT square, would cost about Rs 1.14 crore. The Union ministry of new and renewable energy ( MNRE) will bear 30% of the project cost, said sources.

Fisheries Minister K. A. Jayapal launched the Solar Energy Peoples Movement to promote solar power-based activities in the district at a function here on Wednesday.

The Minister said that the Chief Minister has a vision of developing Tamil Nadu as a world leader in solar energy and introduced Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012 with that goal. The government intends to make solar energy a people’s movement.

Pune: Only 35 out of the approximate 10,000 buildings constructed in the city in the last five years have received the status of an ecofriendly structure.

The civic body adopted the ecohousing policy in 2008 to promote environmental, economic, health and safety benefits that come with such buildings. The policy plans to educate developers, architects as well as buyers to change the city's scenario and to create awareness about such homes. As per the PMC officials, on an average nearly 2,000 building permissions are issued by the PMC each year. Considering this, permissions to around 10,000 buildings have been given in the city in the last five years.

Jaipur: For a state considered a frontrunner in the solar energy sector, Rajasthan is falling behind in the ‘race for the sun’.

In a bid to promote solar power generation in a big way, the Odisha government has decided to finalise a comprehensive solar policy in two months.

The department of science & technology, which is finalizing the policy, has targeted solar power production of 80 Mw in three years. “We had discussions with the chief secretary regarding the solar power policy. The policy is set to be finalised within two months. We are also going to come out with Vision 2020 for the renewable energy sector by that time. In the next one year, solar power production in the state is expected to reach 50 MW and we hope to scale it up to 80 MW in the next three years,” said D N Gupta, secretary (science & technology).

SRINAGAR: Advising people to go for solar energy which is cheap, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah said that big industrial houses are hesitating to come to Jammu and Kashmir because of shortage of power.

He said a 500 MW solar power station will be constructed at Leh which can be used in the State. People should take advantage of subsidy and other benefits available from the Centre to adopt solar energy as alternative to power in their day-to-day life, Dr Abdulllah said.
