State Pollution Control Board organised an awareness workshop on e-waste Management at Forest Information Centre, Jammu.

The work shop first of its kind in the State after the implementation of e-waste Rules, 2011 was attended by the stakeholders involved in the e-waste valve chain, viz, Producers, Sales Officers (Samsung, Videocon, LG), Consumers / Bulk Consumers and Recycling agencies in the State. It was stressed that all the Sales Offices /producers have to open individual and combined collection centres for collection of e-waste and seek authorization from State Pollution Control Board.

The water flow in the Bhavani River has witnessed a substantial increase since last week and the farmers depending on the river for irrigation are gravely concerned. The reason - the water flow has gone up because the textile processing and tannery units are dumping thousands of gallons of untreated, toxic effluents in the river. “We will be happy if the flow increases due to the release of water from the Bhavanisagar dam. What the river receives now is huge amount of toxic effluents from the textile processing and tannery units,” points out district secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association T. Subbu.

Many dyeing units in Karur have been illegally siphoning off groundwater from the parched Amaravathy riverbed. The unlawful activity has been going on unchecked under the very nose of the officials. Scores of dyeing units are situated at Sellandipalayam, Sukkaliyur and Rayanur on the southern banks of the river in Karur. Though a ban is in place on operating dyeing units without zero liquid discharge systems, many units are operating on the sly. The officials have taken token action against some units but many continue to operate unimpeded in the region.

Thirteen units were operating illegally and one unit was closed down in Sidhra area while 13 others including five stone crushers, have been granted ‘consent to operate’ by the State Pollution Control Board in the same area.

Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology, Mian Altaf while giving reply to the question of PDP member Murtaza Ahmed Khan in the Legislative Council today disclosed that SPCB has granted permission to operate 13 units in Sidhra, Ragoora and Majeen area.

Space constraints and the absence of modern infrastructure have prompted 35 textile manufacturing and processing units in Madurai to shift base to Kariapatti in neighbouring Virudhunagar district.

The units manufacture yarn and process them into fabrics before exporting them to various places. The units in Madurai generate an annual revenue of Rs. 100 crore by direct export and Rs. 350 crore by indirect export within India and to the US and the UK.Ritan N. Thakker, Chairman and Managing Director of Southern District Textile Processing Cluster, told The Hindu that 35 of the 70 units in Madurai would form a cluster at Kariapatti where 104 acres of land had been purchased. The industrial units had registered their names at the District Industries Centre in Virudhunagar and once the formalities were over, the construction of industrial units will begin.

Bengaluru: There seems to be no respite from the garbage crisis for citizens of Bengaluru as well as villagers of Mandur as city in-charge minister R. Ashok and Chief Min­ister Jagadish Shet­tar have so far not been able to come up with effective alternative steps.

The BBMP Commissioner, Siddaiah, has even hinted that alternate measures to tackle garbage would take at least three months to roll in and dumping of garbage at Mandur landfill might extend beyond February.

Bangalore: An initiative by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to address the problem posed by slurry waste from granite units at Jigani along Bannerghatta Road has become a boon for garbage contractors. They have got the chance to dump waste on the sly in abandoned quarries of the area.

At least 20 tonnes of Bangalore’s waste finds its way here. The KSPCB though is not complaining, given that it hasn’t really affected its plans to dump slurry waste in the quarry pits.
