The sector relies on informal workers, migrating from drought-prone Marathwada region, working as cane-cutters. Living and working conditions of these workers are exploitative, which keep them in a vicious circle of poverty and indebtedness.

The matter related to M/s Awadh Sugar & Energy Ltd, Hata, Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh not following environmental norms. During inspection by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), hazardous waste like oil and oily sludge recovered from ETP was burned along with baggasse as a fuel in boilers. Also, there was no storage option for oil/oily sludge.

The matter relates to operation of boilers of distillery unit operated by M/s Dhampur Sugar Mills in District Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh affecting the health of the students in the vicinity. The Uttar Pradeh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the District Magistrate, Bijnor was directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to look into the matter and submit a report within a period of one month.
