The Global Acceleration Framework for SDG 6 addresses an issue which cuts across many areas of the UN’s work. Developed by more than 30 UN entities and 40 international organizations, it outlines more efficient and coordinated support to countries to ensure global availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Global warming threatened the right to water and sanitation for "potentially billions of people" said the United Nations World Water Development Report 2020 report released on World Water Day. Policymakers and businesses should seek to manage water resources better, to economise on the electricity and fuel needed to pump, clean and deliver water, the report said.

Water scarcity is already widespread and remains on the rise: it is found in nearly every region in the world. Around 36% of the world’s population is currently living in water-scarce regions. This publication shows that avoiding, reducing and reversing land degradation have positive long-term gains in water security.
