The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Barc) has initiated research and development projects on desalination and water purification technologies so that sea water could be converted into potable water by using atomic energy.

Mumbai: After the state government's decision to carry out a feasibility study to decide whether desalinating sea water is an option to fight the water woes of Mumbai, experts say the membrane technology using is the best possible method that can be used to desalinate sea water.

Sanguem PWD (water supply) Executive Engineer Paranjape has stated that the Selaulim water treatment plant at Selaulim Dam is all set to get a new treatment plant worth about Rs 746 crore and the work on it will commence soon.

The Noida Jal Nigam has proposed to install four new sewerage treatment plants (STP) with upgraded technology at the cost of Rs 150 crore. In the Master Plan 2021, the installation of STPs would not only ensure good environment but would also ensure better quality of treated water, which can be used by the farmers and industries both.

In this study, water samples collected from various ground water sources (bore wells, open wells etc) and surface water (rivers, lakes, etc) and treated water in urban and rural areas and analysed for its nitrate contents. Over 500 samples were analysed for nitrate contents so as to find out the source of contamination and the mechanism of its formation in waters.

City District Nazim Multan Mian Faisal Mukhtar said that the city would be hit by a water crisis by 2011, if work on alternate resources was not started. He said that the available water resources would not be sufficient for the needs of the city by 2010, and that Multan needed a number of water treatment plants to be set up.

Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim Authority (PQA) on Monday singed two memorandum of understanding (MoUs) with a French firm to conduct a comprehensive study on the development of desalination and water treatment plants at Karachi Port and Port Qasim.

Grameen Veolia Water Ltd. launched its first water treatment plant at Goalmari village in Daudkandi, Comilla, on Wednesday.
