Ending a period of some speculation, India's Ministry of Environment & Forests ( MoEF) has placed its show-cause notice to the Adani Group online.

A pre-application Conference organised by Power Finance Corporation for potential bidders for the Cheyyur and Odisha 4000 MW UMPPs witnessed numerous questions on the risks associated with the alleged fraud by PFC, its consultants and officials of the Environment Ministry in facilitating clearances for the project.

This is a comprehensive assessment of the quality of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), compliance with Environment Clearance (EC) conditions and the adequacy of the Environmental Management Plans (EMP) with respect to 105 mines in operation in Goa.

Of the total 179 mining leases surveyed for mapping their distance from wildlife sanctuaries, almost 93 per cent of mines are found to be within 10 kms zone of wildlife sanctuaries.

Of 83 environmental cases pending in various courts across the country, over 70% were filed in 2013 and most of them are related to mining.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Anil Kumar Nanda & Anr. V/s MoEF & Others dated 11/10/2013. In this order NGT has asked the MoEF and State Pollution Control Board to file further details regarding the number of Coal Tar refineries situated in the State of Odisha as well as in West Bengal and the date from which those refineries are operating and whether those refineries have environmental clearance
or not.

The Punjab Government has finally withdrawn the notification on auction of mining without environment clearance from the state environment impact assessment authority (SEIAA) in operational quarries of up to five hectares.

The development is significant as public notices were issued for auctioning 115 quarries in 19 districts. Information to this effect was furnished to the Punjab and Haryana High Court today as the case came up for resumed hearing.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Jagannath Mane Vs. Union of India & Ors dated 10/10/2013 regarding renewal of the mining lease. NGT also stated that the respondent project proponents to whom
the contracts and mining leases have been awarded by the State shall not carry out any mining activity without having obtained the Environmental Clearance from the competent authority in accordance with law.
