According to a survey, faecal intrusion has made ground water in the district unfit for human consumption. A sample survey of well water conducted by the District Suchitwa Mission (DSM) reveals that presence of E.coli bacteria has reached dangerous levels in ground water.

Recent ban on unauthorised river sand-mining

The National Green Tribunal (NGT)’s recent ban on unauthorised river sand-mining is expected to go a long way in saving the Bharathapuzha. The order is expected to save many rivers in the State which have been over-exploited and destroyed by sand-mining.

Kerala has been asked to set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for operating and managing the buses procured by the State with assistance of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Setting up the SPV is the main condition put forward to the Local Self-Government Department by the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) on Urban Infrastructure and Governance to release the first tranche of funds for the JNNURM extended scheme.

World Rivers Day is being observed today
