Central Water Commission has been playing a major role in the water quality monitoring of river water since year 1963 and at present, is observing water quality at 658 key locations (625 on HO network and 33 WQSS) covering major river basins of India.

Central Water Commission is regularly bringing out the publication" Compilation of Status of Ongoing Major and Medium Projects" in order to cater to the ever-growing needs of data on Major and Medium Irrigation Projects. The present publication is a revised version of the erstwhile publication `Hand Book on Water and Related Information'.

The present publication `Abstract on water sector-2020' is a new initiative to provide a general picture of water resources at the national level. The statistics included in the publication inter-alia provide the information on National Water Policy, 2012 and its salient features.

This publication brings out broad guidelines for coastal protection projects. Coastal protection project planning and design being an interdisciplinary task, needs inputs from coastal, geotechnical, hydrology, hydraulics, structural, meteorology, economics, environmental, geology, oceanography and other related disciplines.

Earlier a compendium on silting of reservoirs was published by Central Water Commission in April, 2015 containing sedimentation data on 243 reservoirs.

The investigated water quality analysis results of these (Sirhind Feeder Canal, Rajasthan Feeder Canal and Indira Gandhi Canal) canals from 25 selected locations are compared with the BIS 10500:2012 standards and CPCB standards for Designated Best Use.

The present issue of the publication provides updated basin/site-wise data of river basin (Region-III) covering aspects such as location, drainage area, temperature, average run-off, seasonal water flow, historical water levels, average sediment load , water quality parameters and land use statistics.

The present publication is biennial and attempts to cover a wide range of data on water and related resources in the country. It comprises three chapters along with related appendix tables. Summary tables and charts have been included within the chapters to facilitate overview and better understanding. The introduction presents inter-alia the global water scenario.

Safety of the dams is a very imperative aspect which has to be given priority on an incessant basis for safeguarding the massive national investment and the benefits derived by the nation from the projects.
