Even as automakers and suppliers struggle with the effects of a severe economic downturn, the global movement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions continues to gain momentum. This report is based on an 18-month research project into potential measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the use of passenger vehicles.

Whilst leaders in many nations discuss ambitious targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), there is also an intense debate underway regarding the technical and economic feasibility of different target levels, what emission reduction opportunities should be pursued, and the costs of different options for meeting the targets.

McKinsey has worked with leading institutions over the last 3 years to develop an understanding of the costs and potential of the options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at both a global and regional level. This report takes a deeper look at one of these options, CO2 capture and storage (CCS).

The report, "Environmental and Energy Sustainability: An Approach for India", identified clean power and energy-efficiency measures as having the largest potential impact on emissions, with the capability to reduce CO2 output 28 to 34 per cent by 2030.
