New Delhi: The Supreme Court dismissed a petition by the All India Plastic Industries Association (AIPIA) on Friday that challenged the ban on plastic bags and their manufacturing in the capital.

After an oral direction by the Delhi high court in December 2012, Delhi government had suspended prosecution under its October notification, but will now start cracking down on violations again. The environment department has said that it will come up with an action plan to restart its drive against plastic bags.

New Delhi: Two more people have died of swine flu in the city on Friday, taking the H1N1 toll to seven this year.

The Delhi health department said the victims, both middle-aged, were hospitalized last week and died due to severe complications caused by the viral infection. Another death was reported from Safdarjung Hospital but the officials did not confirm it. A nodal officer said 58 new cases of swine flu or H1N1 influenza have been identified in the capital, taking the total number of cases this season to 302. A 27-year-old man from Delhi succumbed to the H1N1 virus at RML hospital on Wednesday, taking the death toll due to the virus to five in the national capital this year.

Doctors said the patient, who was referred from a nursing home to RML hospital in the first week of February, had developed a lung infection. According to doctors at RML hospital, the man had been kept at the isolation ICU in the hospital for the last few days. "The patient had severe accompanying lung infection, which complicated matters. We had put him on strong antibiotics, in addition to the Tamiflu dose for the H1N1 infection. But he died of multi-organ failure on Wednesday," a doctor at the hospital said.

NEW DELHI: The swine flu cases in the city crossed 200 on Wednesday with 52 new cases being reported by various hospitals and labs. The state health department claimed four people have died due the viral infection so far including a 15-year-old girl who succumbed to the disease at a private hospital recently.

One patient, who was confirmed positive for swine flu, succumbed to his condition at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital but officials said the patient was from Noida, Uttar Pradesh. "The authorities concerned in the state have been informed about the death," said the official.

Instead of dumping concrete waste, around 3,000 metric tones of it will be recycled to be used in city projects like pavement tiles etc. "The one metre of concrete on top of the pile foundation is considered poor concrete and is chopped off.

NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old girl from Patel Nagar, west Delhi has become the latest victim of swine flu in the capital.

The Health department has called a meeting to review the measures in place to counter the steadily increasing cases of swine flu. The meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Health Minister Dr A K Walia said epidemiologists from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), representatives of laboratories authorised to conduct the tests and nodal officers designated for swine flu from hospitals will attend the meeting.

The Delhi Government would be starting Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) services at night shelters run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board in a bid to ensure effective control over the incidence of tuberculosis in the city, Health Minister A.K. Walia said on Monday.

The Minister said that to begin with the service would be provided at 25 night shelters and will be gradually expanded throughout Delhi. “The shelter-less population is the most vulnerable to tuberculosis as this section frequently defaults in regular treatment. The adherence to treatment is a big challenge for this segment of people,’’ the Minister said.

BSES had until February 10 to pay its dues

Power producer NTPC has announced that it will suspend supply to power distribution company BSES starting midnight of February 13 for non-payment of dues. The move will severely impact supply of power in East, West and South Delhi. The NTPC had given BSES until February 10 to pay its dues, failing which power supply would be suspended.

New Delhi: Twenty-one people tested positive for swine flu on Sunday. Three cases each were reported from Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia and Lok Nayak hospitals. Among private hospitals, Max Hospital in Saket, Apollo Hospital in Sarita Vihar and Fortis Vasant Kunj reported one case each.

A senior official in the state health department said at least seven patients were taking treatment at home. “One patient who was confirmed positive for swine flu got the tests done in Delhi and is admitted at Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital in Ghaziabad,” said the official. “Three people have died in swine fluin Delhithis year,” he added.TheDelhi government has designated 22 hospitals, including five private ones, for treatment of swine flu.
