What comes as a major bonanza for farmers in Madhya Pradesh is the state cabinet decision on Tuesday to extend additional subsidy of Rs. 275 crore to the farm sector to offset the impact of the latest hike in electricity tariff by the Electricity Regulatory Authority.

Briefing about the cabinet decision at Mantralaya here, state minister Narottam Mishra told media persons that till now the state government was providing a subsidy of Rs. 1925 crore to farmers. With the additional subsidy approved by the cabinet, the total subsidy to the farm sector now goes up to `2200 crore.

The high court at Jabalpur on Friday removed a stay of more than seven years on a lower court’s order of summons to Dow Chemicals in the US on the Bhopal gas disaster of November 1984.

The gas, kiling thousands, leaked from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. Dow later acquired Union Carbide. In January 2005, the chief judicial magistrate in Bhopal had issued an order of summons on Dow Chemical Company in the US, to produce Carbide officials. On an appeal filed by Dow’s Indian subsidiary, the order was stayed by the HC in March of that year. On Friday, that stay was removed and an order issued to summon Dow in the US (Carbide was merged into it in 2001).

The ministry of environment and forests on Wednesday granted forest clearance to the Mahan coal block spread over 1,082 hectares of prime forest in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh.

This coal block was denied clearance four times by the Forest Advisory Committee, who had cited the presence of a large tribal population dependent on these forests for their livelihood.

After prolonged litigation and arbitration proceedings, Lanco Infratech will be entering into a fresh agreement with the Madhya Pradesh government for supply of the entire 300 Mw power from its Korba power plant in Chattisgarh. The state has agreed to waive the rate ceiling for power to be supplied from the plant, after the two sides reached a settlement through arbitration.

The company had commissioned the plant two years before at a cost of Rs 1,350 crore and was forced to sell it to Punjab in a short-term contract after it found the Rs 2.25 a unit ceiling on power rate was unviable.
