State Pollution Control Board submits report to Govt

SHILLONG: The mineral-rich Jaintia Hills district faces an acute drinking water crisis as water from its major rivers has been declared ‘unfit’ for human consumption due to high level of acidity caused by unscientific mining. The rivers downstream of coal mining areas and cement plants have turned blue five years back, a phenomenon baffling even environmental scientists of the State.

SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to seek additional fund from the Centre to integrate waste to energy project in the sanitary landfill site at Marten, Mawiong.

“If the proposal of the State Government is approved, the State, which is going through a severe power crisis, can benefit a lot since the integration project would help in generating at least 4 megawatts of power,” Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times here on Friday.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government’s clean chit to cement plants which are breaching the forest conservation act has been out rightly questioned by the Maitshaphrang Movement, an NGO which used the RTI findings to reveal the alleged exploitation of forest by these cement giants in the Khliehriat sub-division of Jaintia Hills district.

Deputy Chief Minister, In-Charge, Mining and Geology Bindo M Lanong, two days ago, said, “The officials have attested that the areas under limestone mining are not under agriculture or dense forest areas.”

SHILLONG: Lone KHNAM MDC in the KHADC, Adelbert Nongrum, has come down heavily on the Congress-led Executive Committee for allowing Maheshwari Mining Private Limited to operate in West Khasi Hills district despite claiming that it had cancelled the company’s trading license.

“I have inspected the spot and seen for myself that the firm has its office in Ranikor area,” Nongrum said while speaking during Question Hour on Wednesday.

SHILLONG: A budget allocation of Rs 16,31,00,580 crore was presented during the Budget Session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) session today.

SHILLONG: Endorsing the State government official team’s clean chit to four giant cement factories operating in Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Lanong attributed unscientific coal mining as a major cause of pollution of streams and rivers in Khleihriat sub division.

It is an irrefutable fact that unscientific “rat hole’ mining has contaminated the water sources and bodies within the periphery of the rich coal deposited sites of Khliehriat sub division. Adding more woes was the scientific declaration that waste from cement plants was the cause of death of aquatic lives in Lukha river.
