In fresh trouble for Posco’s proposed iron and steel plant in Orissa, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday admitted a petition challenging the environmental clearance granted to the project

The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday served notices on the Union ministry for environment and forest (MoEF), Orissa government, Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) and Posco India enquiring them about the circumstances under which environmental clearance was given to the South Korean company’s proposal for setting up a 12 million tonne steel plant and a captive port in Jagatsinghpur district.

A severe drought looms large over many parts of Orissa due to inadequate rainfall this season. Most of the districts have received half the normal rainfall. According to revenue department sources, Nuapada district in western Orissa has received 56 per cent rainfall while Boudh and Malkangiri recorded 63 and 61 per cent,

The MoU, which was valid for five years, was signed on June 21, 2005. The company had expressed its intent to set up a 12 million tonne per annum steel plant in Jagatsinghpur district near the Paradip port. It was the only document the company had as proof of its existence in India.
