In an unseemly hurry the state finance minister, Mr Asim Dasgupta, today
announced that the state government would declare eight districts
drought-affected if there is a rainfall deficit till 15 August which is the
deadline for paddy transplantation.

Iodine deficiency is endemic in West Bengal as evident from earlier studies. This community-based, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in North 24 Parganas district during August-November 2005 to assess the consumption of adequately-iodized salt and to ascertain the various factors that influence access to iodized salt.

This press release by UNDP provides an in-depth study of three districts in the Indian state of West Bengal, namely, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Uttar Dinajpur.

The study reveals that where we live can determine our well-being as there are wide variations in human development between districts and also between rural & urban populations.

These District Human Development Reports of Parganas (N), 24-Parganas (S) & North Dinajpur released recently present key developmental challenges of the region. Also warn that Sunderbans is highly vulnerable to climate change & 15 percent of the region will be submerged by 2020.
