AHMEDABAD: Sale of gutka and pan masala is rampant in plastic sachets, even though the Supreme Court has levied a ban on them since March 1last year. Strings of pan masala and gutka sachets of numerous brands continue to hand in shops across the city, even as shopkeepers feign ignorance.

"Who said there is a ban," says Ram Vaghasiya, who runs a pan shop in Shivranjani. There were tobacco products and pan masalas of more than 20 popular brands in his shop. Bhadresh, another shopkeeper in the area, said the supplies continue to be packaged in plastic sachets.

AHMEDABAD: International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is helping Ahmedabad-based Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) provide energy-efficient cook stoves and solar lanters to its members. IFC will provide a partial credit guarantee for a $5 million loan that an Indian private sector bank is providing to SEWA-sponsored Grassroots Trading Network for Women.

Under the initiative, women from various villages in Gujarat will be provided a loan to buy the combination of stove and lantern, at Rs 2,800 and Rs 1,800 respectively.

Ahmedabad Tops The List With Maximum Notices

Ahmedabad: Following repeated violations of pollution norms in chemical hotspots, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued the highest number of show-cause and closure notices in recent times to several clusters of industries. Ahmedabad topped the list with most notices, according to the GPCB’s data. In just two financial years, the GPCB issued 1,680 closure notices to errant factories and nearly 2,118 show-cause notices, for violation of air, water and environment protection Acts respectively.

AHMEDABAD: As many as 41% of the children in the state are underweight and 55% of the women between 15 to 45 years of age in the state are anemic. This was revealed in a Rajya Sabha session on Thursday.

Union minister of state (independent charge) for women and child development, Krishna Tirath in Rajya Sabha gave the details of the number of women and children suffering from malnutrition. Tirath was replying to a question posed by Member of Parliament from Jharkhand, Parimal Nathwani.
