ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad high court asked state government and principal secretary Medical Education to file a short counter affidavit within two weeks in reply to a public interest litigation against equipment for cancer patients lying defunct in Moti Lal Nehru Medical College( MLNMC) Allahabad.

Petitioner advocate Manoj Kumar Singh has said in the PIL that in spite of the presence of equipment related to cancer treatment, no efforts were being made to operate them.

ALLAHABAD: After Maha Kumbh, the 22 crossroads of the city are set to wear a new look, as officials of Allahabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have decided to take up solar powered traffic signal system with the help of a Delhi-based firm under the public-private partnership (PPP ) model.

As part of its pilot project of 2012, solar panels, signal lights and other equipment were installed at four major crossings including Subhash crossing and Rana Pratap crossing but due to Kumbh preparations, the project could not be taken up.

According to a World Bank Sponsored Study (State of Environment Report- U.P.) pollution levels in the Ganga are contributing 9-12% of total disease burden in Uttar Pradesh. The coliform bacteria levels are in excess of 2 lakh MPN as against the national water quality standard of 5000. The report estimated total health damage on account of water pollution in up to is around 6.4 million daily (Disability Adjusted Life Year).

The city is fast transforming into a concrete jungle and while some call it development others are worried for the future of the Sangam city in terms of availability of underground water. The depleting green cover of the city has affected adversely the underground water level of localities in the past 25 years.

TOI spoke to associated professor at the department of Geography, of Allahabad University, A R Siddiqui who has undertaken an extensive survey of the declining vegetative cover of the city, the decrease in level of underground water on the basis of which he has identified vulnerable areas too along with the danger looming on these areas.

New Delhi: Two years ago, 10 small villages along Yamuna were selected for a river restoration project.

The Ganga Action Parivar (GAP) has taken primary steps towards constructing the first zero-waste, “bio-digester” toilet in Uttar Pradesh along the banks of the Ganga.

The initiative is part of GAP’s drive to build 5,000 eco-friendly toilets in villages along the 2,500-km stretch of the Ganga and also integrates its “Green Kashi and Green Prayag” campaign. A special “brick puja” was performed by the organisers on the banks of the Ganga on Tuesday.
