KOCHI: As yet another World Water Day passes by, the drying wells, vanishing waterbodies and the decrease in rainfall catches the attention of environmentalists and scientists alike. While the former is exhorting the public and the powers that be of the dangers of a water crisis, the latter is looking into the reasons behind it.

As the country saw drought-like situation in most regions and recorded 22 per cent less than normal rainfall last year, city-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the India Meteorological Department has charted out its cloud seeding programme for the rain shadow regions in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for this year.

A recent report by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has pointed out that 2009 received the third worst rainfall since 1901, behind 1918 when there was a 25 per cent deficiency and 1972 when the deficiency was 24 per cent of the Long Period Average. The report, released in January, was prepared by the National Climate Centre, IMD, Pune.
