Idukki will get Rs one crore for drought relief works as part of a Rs 125 crore Central fund for various development projects in the five assembly constituencies of the district, P. T. Thomas, MP, has said.

He said that Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned under the Idukki Package and Rs 75 crore for construction of 34 roads under the Prime Minister's Gramin Saadak Yojana Scheme.

Giving a push to the much-delayed Pedder Road flyover, the union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has recommended the project for green clearance after being satisfied with the project proponent’s plans surrounding mitigation of noise and air pollution.

The project has been stuck for over a decade for want of an environmental clearance and opposition from residents along the alignment, including personalities such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Now, with the environmental clearance in the bag, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which is implementing the project, can call for bids for the flyover after soil investigation and traffic permission is received.

GUWAHATI: The State government has signed a loan agreement with World Bank and Government of India for 320 million US Dollars in New Delhi on Monday.

Sources said the loan is for improvement of State highways and district roads under the Assam State Road Project. The project would be implemented over a period of six years, sources added. The objective of the project is to enhance the road connectivity in Assam by assisting the Public Works Department (PWD) to improve and effectively manage its road network.

Karnataka government on Thursday decided to take up the second phase of Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Town Development Programme at a cost of Rs. 1,738 crore, to be spent on road and drainage works in areas coming under urban local bodies (except city corporations).

Eight per cent of these funds would be utilised on road development and the remaining 20 per cent on drainage works, Urban Development Minister S. Suresh Kumar told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.
