Dehra Dun: The gates of the Jim Corbett and Rajaji National Parks may not open on Saturday after the long monsoon break with the Uttarakhand Forest Guard Federation on Friday threatening not to allow visitors into the reserves until their demand for better wages are accepted by the authorities.

Carcass of a young male elephant was today recovered from the Najibabad forest area in Uttar Pradesh barely at a distance of 4 km from the Uttarakhand Motadhang area falling in the Lansdowne forest division.

The state forest officials found a carcass of the elephant aged between 5 to 6 years from an agriculture field in the Chaturawla village area. Confirming the death of the elephant Uttar Pradesh chief wild life warden B.S. Patnaik disclosed that no physical injury was visible and the cause of death could only be ascertained after the post mortem report.

Corbett, August 8: Tourism and its ensuing commercialisation are gradually emerging as big threats to the Corbett Tiger Reserve. Around 40 resorts have come up in the tiger corridor leading up to the reserve and just last month, a tiger was hit on this corridor by a tourist vehicle. There are three other resorts on the banks of the Ramganga and similar resorts can also be spotted on the banks of the Kosi that borders the reserve. At Marchula, agricultural land in between the reserve has been converted into private resorts on both sides of the Ramganga.

Bhima Bawariya was arrested in 2005 following a seizure of tiger parts, is now out on bail This Monday, a team from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) raided a house in Old Gurgaon and recovered a 14-foot long tiger carcass.

At the end of the tourist season on June 30, the Corbett Tiger Reserve recorded a remarkable increase in the number of tourist arrivals. Between October 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008, the reserve earned Rs 2.86 cr as revenue and 1,77,399 tourists visited it, said CTR director Rajiv Bhartari. Efforts of Corbett National Park officials and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) have helped save lives of at least three tigers of the Corbett National Park. According to officials of ministry of environment and forest, the park authorities received some information about dubious movements of a person from Bawariya tribe in a particular area following which they informed the WCCB. The particular area is home to three tigers of the park, officials said, adding that the person had been detained and was now in the judicial custody.

Elephants and human beings in Rajaji National Park in northern India are increasingly arriving into conflict because of the conversion of elephant's natural habitat into agricultural areas. Besides, railway track which passes through the park area, national highways, anthropogenic activities etc are restricting frequent movement of elephants within their home range.

The new state of Uttarakhand in north-west India contains grassland habitats that are potentially suitable for establishing new populations of the one-horned rhinoceros. Dhikala and Paterpani grasslands in Corbett Tiger Reserve and Surai grasslands in the Terai East Forest Division provide the last opportunity for the reintroduction programme in this state.
