MUMBAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a cyclone alert for south Gujarat, implying a wet Wednesday for Mumbai. Mumbai: Cyclonic storm 'Phyan' will hit South Gujarat and North Maharashtra by late this evening following a deep depression in the South East and adjoining Central Arabian Sea and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea, the weather office said.

The Indian Meteorological Department has sounded a cyclone alert for Gujarat and Maharashtra. A depression over the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify in the coming days and move towards the north and northeast.

The government today worked out a compensation package for 6,000 acres to be acquired in the Sunderbans to build embankments washed away because of cyclone Aila in May.

There was no official announcement on the amount to be offered but sources said it could be between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh an acre.

BHUBANESWAR: Natural disasters kill about 1,300 people every year in Orissa, said a report released here Thursday on the 10th anniversary of the super cyclone in which over 8,000 lives were lost.

Prepared by the Orissa State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA), the report was released by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
