The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Faridkot, on orders of the Deputy Commissioner, Faridkot, today went to the Baba Farid Centre for Special Children and forcibly cut hair of children who cannot speak. The CMO, along with a team of doctors, was at the centre to take blood and hair samples of children.

Chandigarh: The curious finding of uranium in the hair and bodies of mentally and physically challenged children in Faridkot has impelled the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) to send an investigative team to Faridkot. S K Malhotra, DAE spokesperson in Mumbai, told TOI,

Little is publicly known about the efficiency and economics of heavy water production at the Department of Atomic Energy’s facilities. We estimate the cost of producing heavy water at the Manuguru plant by analysing the available budget figures and assuming reasonable values for other factors that affect the cost and whose values are not publicly available. Our results suggest that the production costs significantly exceed the price charged under even extremely favourable and unrealistic assumptions.

I have read with interest the article “Kudankulam Meltdown” by Latha Jishnu and others. Since it is based on a direct interaction with the people residing near the project site, it has authenticity.

I live in Visakhapatnam which is close to Kovvada where NPCIL is planning to set up another nuclear power complex. The Kudankulam experience is therefore relevant to people like me.
