Here is good news for the water-starved Uttarakhand. After more than four years of experiments and research, a European Union river bank filtration (RBF) project has ignited new hopes to end the perennial drinking water problem in the hills.

KENDRAPARA: Women carrying pitchers and trudging miles to fetch water is a common sight in the interior areas of Kendrapara these days. Water crisis has gripped the villages as summer slowly peaks.

Due to over exploitation of groundwater over past few years, the water table has gone down drastically in many areas.

Wells have dried up and tube wells are lying defunct.

The wait for additional water may get longer for the city. At a meeting of the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana, the Executive Officer, Cantonment Board, Chandimandir, and the Adviser to the UT Administrator, the Punjab government made no commitment on the volume of water that would be released to Chandigarh for augmentation of Water Supply Scheme, Phase V and VI from Kajauli.

BASIRHAT: Scarcity of drinking water has become an important issue in the upcoming civic elections in Basirhat municipality. People in Basirhat civic areas are suffering due to an acute water crisis as the ruling CPI-M led municipality has failed to supply water to these areas.

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government will build two more check dams on the lower catchments of Indravati river to tackle drinking water scarcity in Nabarangpur district.

This was decided at a high level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
