The Rajasthan Government has sanctioned Rs.88 crore for a new lift scheme to supply drinking water to rural areas in the desert districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer. The lift scheme will carry waters from the Indira Gandhi Canal to 177 villages in Jaisalmer district and 403 in Barmer.The scheme, originating at Pokhran, would get 90 cusecs of water from the canal head in Nachna. A pumping station at Tota village will lift the water and it will flow ahead by natural gravity. According to an official release here, the scheme's route has been set through Phalsoond and Balotra to reach Siwana.

JOYNAGAR (South 24-Parganas): Drinking water scarcity is still a major problem for the residents of 100-year-old Joynagar Mazilpur Municipality. Two reservoirs had been inaugurated in the municipality (consisting of 14 wards) from 1978-1980 but 10 years later, drinking water scarcity became an issue again. The lack of maintenance rendered the two reservoirs decrepit resulting in the disruption of water supply.

Dozens of tail-end growers of Puran Distributary (canal) demonstrated outside the office of Director Nara Canal Area Water Board here on Monday against acute water shortage in canal. Protesters carried banners, raised slogans against irrigation officials and forcibly made their entry into the office in his absence. Later, talking to reporters they complained of being deprived of irrigation water for last four months which had adversely affected their crops, along with disappearance of drinking water, as well.
