Jammu and Kashmir State being mountainous in nature, has been divided into three distinct regions. These are (i) The vale of Kashmir, known as paradise on earth; (ii) The Ladakh, centre for Buddhist culture with a unique geographical setup; and (iii) The Jammu region, well known for its plains, submountain area known as Kandi vis-a-vis Siwaliks of Himalayas.

Two days ahead of World Environment Day, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh planted a number of saplings over a vast area of nearly 48 acres at Jaunapur which is fast emerging as the 41st city forest in the Capital.

The forest in the Aravallis in South Delhi is being developed as per the United Nations Environment Programme specifications.

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board is undertaking effective efforts for preservation of biodiversity wealth in the state through public participation. Local bodies, voluntary organisations, youths and students are also being motivated to undertake these efforts. Best Biodiversity Parks have been developed in several districts of the state with private participation.

Proposed dam inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kerala Forest Research Institute given the task. Pilot study in the region within a fortnight KOCHI: An Environment Impact Assessment of the proposed Kerala Periyar Dam, which will replace the existing Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki, will begin shortly.

Sipahijala sanctuary
Agartala, March 3: Close on the heels of an avian flu outbreak in the state, an unidentified disease has claimed the lives of 10 birds of varied species and three animals in the Sipahijala sanctuary in the past three days.

Authorities of the santuary, 30km south of this town, have initiated precautionary measures and closed the zoo and bird sanctuary to public.
