AHMEDABAD: The world's fourth largest car-maker Ford has decided to set up a three lakh-cars-per-annum manufacturing plant in Sanand.

The Ford Motor Company plans to invest almost $1 billion in northwest India, building factories to make nearly a quarter of a million cars a year, company executives said on Wednesday.

Tata Motors is considering pooling engine production.

Ford Motor Company has embarked on a multi-pronged initiative to reduce CO {-2} (carbon dioxide) emission to 450 PPM (particles per million) by the year 2050.

Disclosing this, Susan M. Cischke, who is a part of President and CEO Allan Mulally's leadership team, said Ford Motor was working towards this by going in for appropriate technological changes.

Automobile companies are keeping their fingers crossed over the possibility of the government introducing differential taxation for diesel vehicles in this Budget, as recommended by the Kirit Parikh Committee report.

US AUTO major Ford is now training its sights on India to offset tough business conditions in other global markets.

Ford Motor Co is selling a closed plant near Detroit to two companies that plan a $725 million investment to develop a renewable energy park that could create up to 4,000 jobs, the carmaker said on Thursday.

Terms of the sale to Xtreme Power and Clairvoyant Energy were not disclosed. The transfer of the plant to the companies is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2010.
