Massive encroachment of forest land in Assam has set the alarm bells ringing in New Delhi. A latest ground report compiled by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests revealed that 3, 30,400.00 hectares of forest land has been encroached upon by illegal settlers as on last year.

“The government is aware of encroachment of forest land in the country, including the northeastern States,” said Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Jayanthi Natarajan. The report compiled by the Environment and Forests Ministry further said that 4, 83,895.43 hectares of forest land (including Assam) is under encroachment in the northeastern States.
